We started out the morning with a breakfast organized by some friends in the ward. I made my first successful batch of cinnamon rolls to take, which made me pretty happy! (Alright, they weren't necessarily unsuccessful last time I made them, but they didn't look very pretty.)It was lots of fun and we even learned a few things about the Declaration of Independence. Emily and Edward had a great time dancing to all the patriotic music.
After going home for lunch (more cinnamon rolls) and naps, we headed to my parents' house for the rest of the festivities.
My family has a lot of 4th of July traditions. When we moved from Utah, we were sad to discover that there aren't really any good carnivals or parades around here, and even if there were, it's too hot to go. So we have always made our own.
We start off with a parade put on by the kids. Emily made a castle float and Edward was a pirate. He loved his pirate ship while we were making it, but for some reason he was really grouchy about the whole parade idea. He walked from the kitchen door to my chair and stayed there, scowling at everyone.
After that, we have a carnival around the house. The kids had lots of fun playing games and getting prizes!
Aunt Becca's face painting was also a huge hit. I think Emily had her face wiped off and repainted at least 3 times. At one point she had a cat nose, a mustache, a bunny and a spider web all on her face at the same time.
The fish pond is always a favorite and the fishing was good this year! The kids spent most of the day yesterday playing with their prizes. Emily got a Tinkerbell notebook that locks, which she thinks is amazing, and a headband and bracelet set, which she is currently wearing with her pajamas. Edward got a bug catching set and a stretchy frog. He has tried several times to find bugs to catch, but hasn't had any success yet.
Even William participated and caught a baby toy!
That was followed by swimming,
and amazing dutch oven food.
This is how William felt about the whole evening. He was not a happy camper for some reason.
Once it got dark, everyone headed outside for fireworks. Emily thought they were amazing. Edward...not so much. He did not like the fireworks at all. He tried 3 or 4 times to go back outside, but each time only lasted a few minutes before he got scared. So he and I hung out inside with William, who was finally sleeping. We played with glow sticks, watched music videos and watched some of the fireworks through the window.

I remember a good 4th from last year. Good times. I almost made Amy crash your party with me but we decided last minute to invite some wardies over so you were saved :)
It looks like it was nice and cloudy on the 4th down there. I hope you all got some rain to go with it, eventually. :)
